Political rift in Senegal between Ousmane Sonko and president
The political divide between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has now reached a critical juncture. During a press briefing in Dakar, the former Prime Minister outlined the reasons behind his party’s decision to boycott the newly formed government led by Ahmadou Alamine Mohamed Lô.
Key areas of disagreement
Sonko highlighted several fundamental policy clashes that have emerged during negotiations with the Head of State. Chief among these are the reform of the judicial system, accountability mechanisms, the renegotiation of economically unfavorable contracts, and the handling of public debt.
The leader of the Pastef-Les Patriotes stressed that his party had not received adequate assurances regarding the government’s financial commitments or future interactions with international lenders. He also voiced concerns about the administration’s approach to subsidies and its stance on judicial governance.
Government composition fuels friction
Beyond policy disputes, the structure of the new cabinet has become a major point of contention. Sonko argued that his party, which holds a dominant position in Senegalese politics, deserved substantial representation in the executive branch. He insisted that the Pastef could not join the government without securing at least half of the ministerial portfolios.
While acknowledging the presence of some allies in the new administration, the former Prime Minister questioned the political legitimacy of the team. Despite these tensions, he ruled out any immediate moves to challenge the government, affirming that the Pastef would not file a motion of no-confidence at this stage.
Rising tensions at the heart of power
This public stance underscores the escalating strains between the presidency and Senegal’s leading political force, which played a pivotal role in the 2024 political transition. The unfolding situation signals a new phase of uncertainty in the relationship between the two institutions.
