A firm stance on Western Sahara
On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Throne Day, celebrated on Thursday, July 30, King Mohammed VI of Morocco received a significant communication from then-US President Donald Trump. In this message, the American leader unequivocally reaffirmed his nation’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Western Sahara territory. Furthermore, President Trump expressed robust support for the Moroccan autonomy plan, presenting it as the singular viable framework for resolving this enduring territorial dispute.
“The United States maintains a clear position: we acknowledge Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorse the serious, credible, and pragmatic Moroccan autonomy proposal as the exclusive foundation for an equitable and lasting resolution,” President Trump explicitly stated in his communiqué.
The former occupant of the White House firmly asserted that “any alternative approach merely perpetuates the current stalemate,” which he deemed “unacceptable.” He emphasized, “This disagreement must conclude now, and the United States will persist in driving progress toward this objective.”
In a congratulatory message extended to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, Donald Trump underscored the “250 years of American history and steadfast friendship with Morocco,” describing a bond “forged in mutual trust and respect.”
The American President also lauded King Mohammed VI’s “wise leadership,” portraying him as “a cornerstone of stability.” He highlighted Morocco’s unwavering commitment to fostering peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding the security of both American and Moroccan citizens, notably through its pivotal involvement in the Abraham Accords. President Trump added, “To this end, we will also collaborate to ensure the security of the Sahel region.” This commitment to regional stability is vital for current affairs and on the ground Sahel reporting.
From an economic perspective, the United States President confirmed that he had directed his teams to “advance economic and social development with Morocco, encompassing the Western Sahara region.” He specifically identified technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense as strategic sectors for this burgeoning partnership.
“Together, we will usher in a new era,” the American President concluded, advocating for a bilateral relationship that prioritizes the shared interests of both peoples.
