As his diplomatic mission in Togo drew to a close, European Union Ambassador Gwilym Ceri Jones was received by President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé this Thursday. The occasion provided the diplomat with an opportunity to deliver a glowing appraisal of a partnership he characterized as having significantly increased in both breadth and influence.
Following his farewell audience, the European Ambassador remarked on the expanded collaboration between Brussels and Lomé during his tenure. This partnership now extends across vital sectors including sustainable development, infrastructure, energy, governance, education, and security. He explained that his meeting with the Togolese head of state was to engage in discussions, listen to perspectives, and assess the current state of their ongoing cooperation.

Burgeoning investment programs driving growth
The diplomat emphasized the strengthening of European investment programs within Togo, highlighting a portfolio that presents numerous opportunities for both Togolese and European private sectors. According to him, this dynamic is poised to foster economic growth and job creation in key strategic areas such as energy, agriculture, and digital technology.
Security and development: an integrated approach
The Ambassador also focused on the deepening cooperation in peace and security, which he considers an indispensable element of any development initiative. He noted that the European Union has augmented its support for the Togolese armed forces, assisting both in counter-terrorism efforts and in bolstering maritime security.
Furthermore, Gwilym Ceri Jones expressed his appreciation for the robust relations established between Togo and the European Union, conveying his confidence in the continued progression and enhancement of this partnership beyond his own mandate.
The DCP 2021-2027: a framework for robust cooperation
European interventions in Togo are structured under the Joint Multi-annual Programming Document (DCP) 2021-2027, which boasts a significant portfolio of 201 million euros. This framework directs funding towards three primary pillars: human development and socio-economic inclusion, sustainable agro-industries and natural resource management, and fostering a peaceful and resilient Togolese society built on inclusive governance.
New tripartite mechanism for business collaboration
This cooperative momentum received a further boost last June with the official launch of a tripartite cooperation mechanism. This initiative brings together the Togolese government, Team Europe, and Eurocham Togo. This permanent consultation framework is designed to enhance the attractiveness of the business climate, stimulate European investments, and support the economic reforms being implemented by the Togolese government.
It is also intended to channel cooperation towards more tangible outcomes: creating employment opportunities, developing the private sector, and achieving the structural transformation of the Togolese economy. These collective initiatives, according to both parties, underscore the enduring strength of a partnership poised for continued success even after Ambassador Jones’ departure.
