Togo’s anc denounces proposed constitutional overhaul talks

The Alliance Nationale pour le Changement (ANC) has voiced strong opposition to recent speculation regarding a new political dialogue centered on a potential revision of the Togolese Constitution. In a public statement issued on May 28, 2026, the party, under the leadership of Jean-Pierre Fabre, condemned what it perceives as a calculated political diversion. The ANC firmly reiterated its refusal to engage in any process it deems lacking genuine consensus.

According to the ANC, information circulating about preparatory discussions to once again amend the constitutional text raises serious questions. The party believes such an initiative would fail to address the true democratic and governance concerns of the Togolese populace. Instead, it suggests the move is designed to further entrench the existing political framework established by recent institutional reforms.

In its official communiqué, the political group declared its non-participation in any process resembling a “sham dialogue.” It urged democratic forces, civil society organizations, and Togo’s international partners to remain vigilant against any reform not stemming from broad national consensus.

The ANC continues to express its reservations concerning the Constitution currently in effect. For the party, the institutional alterations implemented over recent years persist in generating apprehension regarding their legitimacy and their actual capacity to fulfill the democratic aspirations of the people.

Through this public declaration, the opposition reaffirmed its conviction that any significant constitutional reform must be preceded by an inclusive dialogue. Such a dialogue, it insists, must bring together all political and social stakeholders across the country, a condition deemed essential to ensure the credibility and ultimate acceptance of any future reforms.

This decisive stance emerges amid a national political landscape where institutional matters consistently dominate public discourse. As rumors intensify around a potential new constitutional revision, the ANC clearly intends to distance itself and preempt any initiative it considers contrary to the spirit of a consensual democratic process.
