Yan Couto set for potential departure from Borussia Dortmund
After months of uncertainty surrounding his future, Brazilian right-back Yan Couto appears on the brink of leaving Borussia Dortmund. Reports indicate the Bundesliga side has reached a preliminary agreement with Serie A club Como 1907 for the player’s temporary transfer, with an option to make the move permanent.
From Manchester City loan to Dortmund transfer saga
Dortmund initially secured Couto on loan from Manchester City in 2024, with a pre-agreed purchase option. The club exercised this clause multiple times throughout 2025, ultimately spending €25 million to make his move permanent—despite his inconsistent performances during his first season. The Brazilian struggled to secure a regular starting spot and was frequently sidelined, particularly in the final months of the campaign.
Como emerges as Couto’s new destination
Under the guidance of coach Cesc Fàbregas, Como has become an attractive destination for Couto. The Italian club, which finished fourth in Serie A last season, is set to compete in the UEFA Champions League, offering the Brazilian the chance to play at Europe’s highest level. While Como’s interest in Couto had reportedly waned earlier this summer, recent developments suggest the club is reconsidering the move.
For Dortmund, this potential departure aligns with their strategy to streamline the squad. Couto’s contract runs until 2030, but his limited playing time under Niko Kovač—including just 12 minutes between mid-March and mid-May—has raised questions about his future role at the club. A temporary move to Como could provide the player with the minutes he needs while allowing Dortmund to recoup some of their investment.
