Niamey, the capital of Niger, hosted the second session of consultations between the foreign ministers of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) and Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday, July 8.

The delegations included Niger’s Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop, and Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré. Together, they finalized key areas of alignment between their diplomatic agendas, reinforcing collaboration across multiple fronts.

Mali’s Diop highlighted the fruitful and consistent AES-Russia exchanges, noting significant progress in both military cooperation and economic development initiatives. These discussions are grounded in a shared diplomatic vision that prioritizes mutual growth and stability in the region.

Strengthening regional security and economic ties

During the talks, AES ministers emphasized the urgent need to enhance military cooperation to bolster the operational capabilities of the unified AES force. Their focus aligns with the broader goal of combating terrorism and ensuring long-term security across the Sahel.

Additionally, the ministers underscored the importance of deepening economic partnerships as outlined in the AES Confederation’s Year Two Roadmap. This strategic alignment aims to foster sustainable development and improve living conditions for local populations.

Russia’s renewed commitment to the AES partnership

Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s dedication to strengthening its mutually beneficial partnership with the AES Confederation. He stressed Moscow’s unwavering support for both security initiatives and sustainable development projects in the region, emphasizing Russia’s role in advancing the welfare of Sahel populations.

The initial AES-Russia consultations took place in Moscow in April 2025, marking the beginning of a structured dialogue. Lavrov’s current visit to Niamey reflects the ongoing commitment to this partnership as part of his broader diplomatic outreach in Africa.
