The bustling capital of Niger, Niamey, became the focal point of regional diplomacy on July 8 as the second round of high-level consultations between the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and Russia took center stage.

The meeting brought together key diplomatic figures: Niger’s Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop, and Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, alongside Russia’s top diplomat, Sergei Lavrov. Together, they mapped out fresh strategies to deepen cooperation across multiple fronts.

Mali’s Foreign Minister Diop emphasized the productive nature of ongoing AES-Russia exchanges, highlighting “steady progress in both security cooperation and economic initiatives. These discussions have translated into tangible outcomes, from enhanced military collaboration to trade partnerships rooted in shared diplomatic goals.”

On counterterrorism efforts, the AES ministers underscored the urgency of boosting joint military action to reinforce the operational capacity of the AES Unified Force. They also stressed the importance of economic partnerships aligned with the AES’s Second-Year Roadmap—a strategy aimed at fostering sustainable growth and stability in the region.

Russia’s Lavrov, speaking from Niamey, reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to a “mutually advantageous partnership” with the AES. He pledged continued support for both security initiatives within the confederation and sustainable development projects designed to improve living standards for local populations.

This gathering marked the second AES-Russia consultation, following the inaugural session held in Moscow in April 2025. It also coincided with Lavrov’s latest African tour, signaling Russia’s intensified diplomatic engagement in the region.
