Central African Republic and Cameroon de-escalate border incident

A commitment to dialogue has ultimately prevailed, ensuring continued cooperation and stability along the shared border between the Central African Republic and Cameroon. The recent incident involved two Cameroonian gendarmes, captured in widely circulated social media videos, openly carrying Kalashnikovs while moving through the village of Gasol, a clearly demarcated Central African territory.

Local residents, who filmed the encounter, accused the two armed men of engaging in racketeering. The Central African Armed Forces, with a unit already stationed in the area, were swiftly alerted by the population. They intervened promptly, effectively bringing the gendarmes’ unauthorized progression to a halt.

Considering this incursion a blatant violation of national sovereignty, the Central African military personnel proceeded to disarm the two gendarmes. Following their disarmament, they were escorted to the Beloko police station, strategically located at the frontier with Cameroon.

High-level meeting resolves dispute

On Tuesday, a high-level meeting brought together senior authorities from both nations. The discussions successfully fostered an atmosphere of calm, leading to a peaceful resolution of the incident. Both Bangui and Yaoundé unequivocally reaffirmed their steadfast commitment to respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of each state.

The weapons that had been seized during the incident were subsequently returned to the Cameroonian gendarmerie. Additionally, a dedicated follow-up committee has been established to ensure the comprehensive resolution of this matter and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

For many decades, citizens of the Central African Republic have consistently raised concerns about what they perceive as an illegal occupation by Cameroon of certain sections of the border region – an accusation that the government in Yaoundé continues to deny.
