Call for justice and democratic safeguards

A leading Gabonese political movement has intensified calls for the unconditional release of Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nzé, a prominent opposition figure currently held in Libreville’s central prison. The Movement for the Grandeur of Gabon (MGG), led by President Christian Mermance N’nang Nsome, issued a formal statement advocating for his freedom, citing concerns over the preservation of democratic principles and the rule of law.

The MGG, known for its dual stance as a presidential ally and a staunch defender of Gabonese citizens’ rights, emphasized that the detention of Bilie-By-Nzé—held since April 2026 on allegations of fraud involving five million CFA francs—raises serious questions about justice in Gabon. The movement argues that the case threatens the democratic gains secured through decades of political struggle, particularly as multiple opposition parties now face potential dissolution under recent legislative changes.
