During his recent investiture rally held at the bustling Dakar Arena, prominent political figure Ousmane Sonko addressed the critical subject of Senegal’s upcoming 2027 local elections. He articulated a resolute position concerning any prospective postponement of these crucial polls.

In front of a vast assembly of dedicated PASTEF party members and distinguished officials, the party leader unequivocally declared that his political organization would vehemently oppose any measure leading to a delay in the local elections. “PASTEF will not agree to a postponement of the local elections. We are prepared,” he announced, drawing enthusiastic applause from his supporters gathered at the Dakar Arena.

Continuing his impactful address, Ousmane Sonko underscored that any decision to defer the elections must, in his view, strictly adhere to the institutional frameworks mandated by Senegalese law. He emphasized the procedural requirement, stating, “A postponement of an election is not even possible in Senegal without passage through the National Assembly.” He further urged all relevant officials to promptly initiate the necessary procedures to ensure the timely conduct of the elections.

The head of PASTEF also appeared to be responding to ongoing speculations regarding the electoral calendar. “Let the President sign the decree; sluggishness will not save the day,” he asserted, signaling an expectation for decisive action from President Diomaye Faye concerning the 2027 local elections.
