Pilgrims return from hadj 2026 with prayers for Burkina Faso peace

Ouagadougou’s international airport buzzed with jubilation as the first group of 342 Burkinabè pilgrims touched down on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. Their arrival marked the official start of the return phase for those who had completed the sacred Islamic pilgrimage, bringing with them prayers for national harmony.

Clad in vibrant boubous, the pilgrims radiated joy and relief upon stepping onto Burkinabè soil. Among them was Hadja Karidja Karambiri/Koné, whose eyes welled up with emotion as she embraced her loved ones. “My journey to Mecca was beyond my wildest dreams,” she shared, her voice trembling with gratitude. “For a first-time pilgrim like me, this experience was truly fulfilling. Every moment was perfect… We prayed fervently for the restoration of peace and social cohesion across Burkina Faso.”

While final assessments are yet to be released, Saïdou Sankara, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, confirmed the smooth execution of this year’s pilgrimage. “No major incidents marred the journey,” he stated, adding that the government extends its deepest appreciation to all returning safely.

We stand here tonight to celebrate the safe return of our brothers and sisters who have fulfilled their spiritual duty,” Sankara continued. “On behalf of the Prime Minister, we extend our heartfelt congratulations. May this pilgrimage strengthen their faith, and may every prayer uttered in Mecca be answered—for their families and for our beloved nation.
