The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) have reaffirmed their strict ban on unauthorized smartphone use by troops in combat zones, citing severe security risks to both personnel and mission success.
Heightened Security Alert
In a fresh directive issued on July 9, acting FARDC spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mak Hazukay emphasized the dangers posed by mobile phone use in active combat areas. “An activated or carelessly used phone can reveal troop positions, enable enemy tracking, and expose entire units to devastating attacks,” he warned.
Clear Restrictions
The military has explicitly prohibited all unauthorized smartphone activities, including:
- Sharing real-time locations or movement plans
- Disclosing troop numbers or operational details
- Posting or transmitting images or videos of military operations
- Using social media or messaging apps without authorization
Strict Compliance Required
Commanders have ordered troops to:
- Adhere rigorously to established communication protocols
- Immediately report any suspicious phone activity
- Prevent information leaks that could jeopardize operations
The FARDC emphasized that a single misstep with a mobile device could endanger an entire platoon, urging soldiers to maintain maximum vigilance and operational focus.
Context of Recent Violations
This stern warning follows the circulation of multiple videos showing soldiers complaining about conditions in the Fizi and Mwenga highlands of South Kivu, where they face persistent attacks from the AFC/M23 rebel group. Similar incidents occurred previously when the frontlines were closer to Goma, prompting repeated military warnings about operational security.
The FARDC has consistently reiterated these restrictions to prevent any actions that might undermine the fight against the AFC/M23 rebellion.
