Ousmane Sonko addresses prospects for the 2029 presidential election

When questioned about his potential bid for the 2029 presidency, the leader of the Pastef party, Ousmane Sonko, maintained a measured and cautious stance. The current President of the National Assembly indicated that it is far too early to engage in discussions regarding specific candidacies.
Ousmane Sonko noted that while there are numerous public initiatives already calling for him to run in 2029, he prefers to wait for the appropriate moment to address the matter. He emphasized that Pastef is a structured political organization that will ultimately decide on and invest in the candidate of its choosing. According to him, the party has not yet reached the stage of making such determinations.
Regarding the possibility of Bassirou Diomaye Faye seeking a second term in 2029, Sonko remained detached from the speculation. He stated that the sitting President has his own path to follow, just as Sonko has his own. He clarified that he does not intend to speculate or dwell on the potential future candidacy of the current Head of State, focusing instead on the immediate political landscape in Sénégal.
