He emphatically highlighted a stark disparity between the deep-seated aspirations of the Senegalese people and the prevailing political realities.
On Saturday, Ousmane Sonko commanded a significant gathering in Linguère, addressing a massive assembly of dedicated activists who had converged to show their unwavering support for the Pastef leader. In a spirited and direct address, Sonko delivered an unreserved condemnation of the acting President of the Republic, who had removed him from his post as Prime Minister just last May.
Sénégal’s unfulfilled mandate
Before an engaged audience, Ousmane Sonko forcefully articulated a profound divergence between the core ideals that initially propelled the movement to power and the current actions undertaken by the executive branch. In a particularly resonant moment, he declared with conviction: “The Senegalese people did not vote for this. The Senegalese people did not fight for this outcome. Lives were not sacrificed for this. Individuals did not endure imprisonment for this. The Senegalese people struggled to fundamentally alter the system. Yet, today, it is that very system that occupies the presidential palace and continues to organize itself.”
This powerful statement unequivocally signals a complete and undeniable rupture between the Pastef leader and the individual now holding the highest office. It directly targets the current administration’s governance, which Sonko perceives as fundamentally misaligned with the principles and battles fought during their time in opposition. Clearly resolute in his intention to confront the President of Kiiraay – Les Patriotes républicains – Les Patriotes républicains in the upcoming electoral contests, Ousmane Sonko expressed profound confidence in a future victory, irrespective of any political maneuvers by his adversaries.
“That is why I believe he can enlist all the mayors or forge alliances with every party he wishes. My appeal is solely to the people. Because in a democracy, there is only one ultimate truth, and that truth resides with the people,” he proclaimed, directing his message not only to his loyal militants but also to all citizens of Sénégal.
