In a sharp retort that has reignited political discussions in Saint-Louis, Modou Mbène Guèye, the local coordinator of Pastef, took direct aim at former deputy Abba Mbaye following his recent television appearance.

Political Sacrifices and Alleged Betrayals

During his TV appearance, Abba Mbaye accused Ousmane Sonko of sacrificing political allies to consolidate power, drawing parallels with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s current strategy. Mbaye claimed that Sonko’s approach mirrored the tactics now being employed to reshape the president’s coalition. This critique came shortly after Modou Mbène Guèye publicly aligned himself with the government in early August, following a meeting with the head of state. Guèye justified his decision by condemning what he described as the nation’s political decline, stating that Senegal’s once-admired democratic model had devolved into a spectacle.

A Blistering Response from Saint-Louis

Modou Mbène Guèye wasted no time in countering these remarks, accusing Abba Mbaye of political amnesia. In a scathing statement, Guèye dismissed Mbaye’s criticisms, asserting that the former deputy had contributed nothing to the election victories of President Faye or Prime Minister Sonko, despite previously attacking them. “Mbaye has no principles, no convictions, and no ethics—only ingratitude defines him,” Guèye declared, before revisiting Mbaye’s past statements.

Contradictions in Mbaye’s Political Journey

Guèye highlighted inconsistencies in Mbaye’s political career, noting that as a deputy elected in July 2022 under the Yewwi Askan Wi banner, Mbaye had publicly distanced himself from any obligations to allies. Guèye contrasted this with earlier campaign remarks where Mbaye accused Sonko of blocking his path to the mayoralty. He also recalled Mbaye’s disrespectful comments about the late Socialist Party leader, Ousmane Tanor Dieng, and his contentious stance during the installation of Senegal’s 14th legislature.

Pastef’s Commitment to Saint-Louis Remains Unshaken

Closing his rebuttal, Modou Mbène Guèye reaffirmed that Saint-Louis would remain steadfast in its support for Pastef, regardless of any perceived advantages Abba Mbaye might gain from his shift toward the ruling camp. He emphasized the party’s grassroots mobilization, revealing that over 3,750 membership cards had already been distributed in the commune as part of a renewal drive. A second phase of this campaign is set to launch this Saturday, August 8th.
