Ousmane Sonko warns of heavy defeat for power amid Senegal assembly dissolution talks
The ongoing political discourse in Sénégal continues to be dominated by the prospect of a potential dissolution of the National Assembly. During a Pastef rally held this Saturday in Linguère, Ousmane Sonko clearly articulated his stance on this hypothetical scenario, simultaneously delivering a firm caution to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
According to the Pastef leader, a dissolution of the National Assembly, followed by snap legislative elections, would prove detrimental to the interests of the current administration. He confidently affirmed that his political faction would secure an overwhelming victory in such a ballot.
“If he organizes local elections, we will defeat him. If he dissolves the Assembly, it will be even worse for him. In fact, that is precisely what we desire, as we are poised to beat him decisively,” he declared.
Ousmane Sonko went further, raising the possibility that the Head of State could find himself politically weakened following an electoral defeat.
“Afterwards, I even fear he might throw in the towel before 2029,” he added.
Sonko calls for calm among his militants
Beyond the electoral prospects, the Pastef president also urged his supporters to exercise vigilance and restraint. He advised them against falling into potential provocations.
Ousmane Sonko believes that certain actors are seeking to incite his party’s militants to react, thereby creating a justification for implementing measures against Pastef.
“I appeal to everyone for vigilance and calm. They are currently exploring ways to provoke Pastef so that our youth react, enabling them to dissolve the party and revoke its official registration,” he affirmed.
For the Pastef leader, if his militants manage to avoid provocations and remain mobilized, the upcoming electoral cycles could overwhelmingly swing in favor of his camp, which he characterized as “a mere walk in the park.”
