Political tensions in Senegal have escalated as opposition leader Ousmane Sonko of the Pastef party directly addressed President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the rumored dissolution of the National Assembly. Speaking at a rally in Linguère, Sonko issued a stark warning about the potential electoral consequences if the president proceeds with such a move.

According to Sonko, any decision to dissolve the Assembly would significantly weaken the ruling party’s position in upcoming elections. However, he emphasized that a dissolution would be particularly damaging, as it could backfire against Faye himself. « If he organizes local elections, we will defeat him. But if he dissolves the Assembly, it will be far worse for him—and that’s precisely what we prefer, » Sonko declared, addressing the president directly. « We will crush him at the polls, and I even fear he may step down before 2029. »

« I urge everyone to stay alert and calm, » Sonko stated. « They are trying to provoke Pastef to push our youth into reacting, giving them an excuse to dissolve the party and revoke its registration. » He stressed that the ability of militants to avoid such provocations would directly influence the outcome of the next electoral rounds—whether local or early legislative elections—which he described as « an easy walk in the park » for his camp.
